Successful Repair of Net Winch System Malfunction on Fishing Vessel at Truong Sa Island
On May 18, 2025, the Logistics and Technical Service Center on Truong Sa Island (under Naval Squadron 129 of the Vietnam People's Navy) successfully repaired the net winch system malfunction of fishing vessel NT02070TS.
The NT02070TS fishing vessel, captained by Mr. Trần Văn Hòa, a resident of Khanh Hai Commune, Ninh Hai District, Ninh Thuan Province, departed on May 11, 2025, with six crew members onboard engaging in purse seine fishing. At 7:00 AM on May 18, 2025, while fishing six nautical miles southwest of Truong Sa Island, the vessel encountered a malfunction in the net winch control box.
The vessel contacted the Logistics and Technical Service Center on Truong Sa Island for guidance and was directed to the island’s dock for repair. Upon inspection, the Center’s technical team found that the gearbox cover of the net winch control system was cracked, causing hydraulic oil to leak and resulting in a loss of pressure and system failure.
With the captain’s consent, the technical team dismantled the damaged gearbox cover and brought it to the repair workshop for mechanical re-sealing. By 4:00 PM, the repairs were completed, the part was reinstalled on the fishing vessel, and the system was successfully tested under load with stable operation.
During the repair period, Center personnel also conducted communication activities to raise awareness about the Prime Minister’s Directive 45/CT-TTg; introduced the functions of the docks and fishing villages on Truong Sa Island District. Additionally, the Center donated national flags, personal life vests, 1,500 liters of fresh water, and other essential supplies and medicines to the fishermen onboard.
This is a regular activity of Naval Squadron 129 in the Truong Sa Archipelago as part of the program “Vietnamese Navy as a Staunch Support for Fishermen at Sea,” and contributes to the national effort to overcome the European Union’s yellow card warning.
Naval Squadron 129 has been tasked by the Navy Command to operate two Logistics and Technical Service Centers on Truong Sa and Sinh Ton Islands, and two fishing villages on Nui Le and Toc Tan Islands, with responsibilities including education, support, and assistance for fishermen at sea.
Since 2020, Naval Squadron 129 has provided information about Directive 45/CT-TTg on sustainable fishing to over 7,000 fishermen across 1,500 fishing vessels; distributed 1,200 medical kits, 11,378 national flags, and 4,800 personal life vests; provided more than 3,000 m³ of fresh water; offered free repair services to over 150 fishing vessels; and guided more than 5,000 vessels to safe anchorage during storms.
